One of the upsides of being an English major all those many years ago was getting to read the insights of so many people who were so good at their craft. Granted that writing styles and language have changed over the years, so what was written by Shakespeare or Thoreau or even Mark Twain may not connect so readily with today's' readers as when the ink was barely dry. Yet, much of what was written still "speaks" or even "bites" today... thus actually giving it even more import than it otherwise would be assessed.
Samuel Johnson (aka Dr. Johnson - 1709-1784) was known for willingly stirring the societal pot with his quotes. Here are a few that I believe speak also to the 21st century.
Curiosity is one of the permanent and certain characteristics of a vigorous mind. (Most parents will attest to that!)
Hope is itself a species of happiness, and, perhaps, the chief happiness which this world affords. (And hope that leads to Jesus affords us happiness beyond this world.)
In order that all men may be taught to speak truth, it is necessary that all likewise should learn to hear it. (Which is why listening is still more important than talking.)
Integrity without knowledge is weak and useless, and knowledge without integrity is dangerous and dreadful. (Should be a required memory verse for anyone involved in a political campaign!!)
People need to be reminded more often than they need to be instructed. (One more time...)
And perhaps my favorite...
A cucumber should be well-sliced, dressed with pepper and vinegar, and then thrown out. (Although I do actually eat a cucumber slice on occasion.)
